Tasting Helix wines was another of the six big disappointments of our trip to Deer Park. Located at 822 W Sprague Av. in downtown Spokane, it’s not prepared to host wine tasters, at least not in an “industrial” way or, if you will: touristy!

The attention was fabulous, so we can’t complain. However, few wines and chardonnay, our favorite type of wine, only had one sample of the rest were all red. Chardonnay, by the way, is a variety that tops the list of the most desired white wines worldwide.
La atención fue fabulosa, por lo que no nos podemos quejar. Sin embargo, pocos vinos y chardonnay, nuestro tipo de vino favorito, solamente tenian una muestra, del resto eran todos tinto. El chardonnay, por cierto, es una variedad que encabeza la lista de los más apetecidos vinos blancos a nivel mundial.

Chardonnay is a green-skinned grape variety used to make white wine. It is native to the Burgundy wine region in eastern France, but now grows everywhere wine is produced, from England to New Zealand. For new and developing wine regions it is seen as a “rite of passage” and as an easy entry into the international wine market.
La chardonnay es una variedad de uva de piel verde usada para hacer vino blanco. Es originaria de la región vitícola de Borgoña, en el este de Francia, pero ahora crece en todas partes donde se produce vino, desde Inglaterra hasta Nueva Zelanda. Para regiones vitícolas nuevas y en desarrollo es visto como un “rito de paso” y como una fácil entrada en el mercado internacional del vino.
The Chardonnay grape is very neutral, with many of the flavors commonly associated with the grape and those derived from terroir and oak. It is vinified in very different styles, from the lean and clearly mineral wines of Chablis (France) to the wines of the new world with oak and notes of tropical fruits. In cold climates (such as the French region of Chablis and the AVA Los Carneros de California), chardonnay tends to have a medium to light body, a remarkable acidity and flavors of green plum, apple and pear. In warm locations (such as the Adelaide Hills, the Mornington Peninsula in Australia and the Gisborne and Marlborough regions of New Zealand) the flavors become more citrus and melon and peach while in very warm locations (such as the AVA Central Coast of California) more notes of fig and tropical fruits such as banana and mango appear. Wines that have gone through malolactic fermentation tend to have lower acidity and fruit flavors with a butterier feel in the mouth and notes of hazelnut.

La uva chardonnay es muy neutral, con muchos de los sabores comúnmente asociados con la uva y los que derivan del terruño y del roble. Es vinificada en estilos muy diferentes, desde los vinos magros y nítidamente minerales de Chablis (Francia) a los vinos del nuevo mundo con roble y con notas de frutas tropicales. En climas fríos (como la región francesa de Chablis y la AVA Los Carneros de California), la chardonnay tiende a tener un cuerpo de medio a ligero, una notable acidez y sabores a ciruela verde, manzana y pera. A peak of popularity in the late 1980s led to a reaction about this wine that made the grape look negative due to the globalization of wine. However, it remains one of the most widely planted grape varieties, with some 160,000 hectares.4around the world. It is found only after airén on the list of most planted white wine grapes. It is planted in more wine-growing regions than any other grape, including cabernet sauvignon.

Then, they had no food, what in Venezuela they call “pasapalos”, in Cuba: “bocaditos” and in Spain “tapas”. We had to order a tray at a restaurant in the area which took about 20 minutes to bring it, although it turned out it was well stocked.

Luego, no tenían comida, lo que en Venezuela llaman “pasapalos”, en Cuba: “bocaditos” y en España “tapas”. Tuvimos que ordenar una bandeja en un restaurante de la zona que se demoró unos 20 minutos en traerla, aunque resultó que estaba bien surtida.
At the end we took a box of the only chardonnay that Helix offers and left highly disappointed and remembering how much fun we had in the vineyard of St. Augustine, north of La Florida.
Al final nos llevamos una caja del único chardonnay que ofrece Helix y salimos altamente decepcionados y recordando lo bien que la pasamos en el viñedo de St. Agustín, al norte de La Florida.
